The Highwayman (excerpt)

BY ALFRED NOYES

PART ONE
The wind was a torrent of darkness among the gusty trees.
The moon was a ghostly galleon tossed upon cloudy seas.
The road was a ribbon of moonlight over the purple moor,
And the highwayman came riding—
         Riding—riding—
The highwayman came riding, up to the old inn-door.
He’d a French cocked-hat on his forehead, a bunch of lace at his chin,
A coat of the claret velvet, and breeches of brown doe-skin.
They fitted with never a wrinkle. His boots were up to the thigh.
And he rode with a jewelled twinkle,
         His pistol butts a-twinkle,
His rapier hilt a-twinkle, under the jewelled sky.
Over the cobbles he clattered and clashed in the dark inn-yard.
He tapped with his whip on the shutters, but all was locked and barred.
He whistled a tune to the window, and who should be waiting there
But the landlord’s black-eyed daughter,
         Bess, the landlord’s daughter,
Plaiting a dark red love-knot into her long black hair.
And dark in the dark old inn-yard a stable-wicket creaked
Where Tim the ostler listened. His face was white and peaked.
His eyes were hollows of madness, his hair like mouldy hay,
But he loved the landlord’s daughter,
         The landlord’s red-lipped daughter.
Dumb as a dog he listened, and he heard the robber say—
“One kiss, my bonny sweetheart, I’m after a prize to-night,
But I shall be back with the yellow gold before the morning light;
Yet, if they press me sharply, and harry me through the day,
Then look for me by moonlight,
         Watch for me by moonlight,
I’ll come to thee by moonlight, though hell should bar the way”…

“November Rain”
by: Guns and Roses

When I look into your eyes
I can see a love restrained
But darlin’ when I hold you
Don’t you know I feel the same’Cause nothin’ lasts forever
And we both know hearts can change
And it’s hard to hold a candle
In the cold November rainWe’ve been through this such a long long time
Just tryin’ to kill the painBut lovers always come and lovers always go
And no one’s really sure who’s lettin’ go today
Walking awayIf we could take the time
To lay it on the line
I could rest my head
Just knowin’ that you were mine
All mine
So if you want to love me
Then darlin’ don’t refrain
Or I’ll just end up walkin’
In the cold November rainDo you need some time…on your own
Do you need some time…all alone
Everybody needs some time… on their own
Don’t you know you need some time…all aloneI know it’s hard to keep an open heart
When even friends seem out to harm you
But if you could heal a broken heart
Wouldn’t time be out to charm youSometimes I need some time…on my own
Sometimes I need some time…all alone
Everybody needs some time… on their own
Don’t you know you need some time…all aloneAnd when your fears subside
And shadows still remain
I know that you can love me
When there’s no one left to blame
So never mind the darkness
We still can find a way
‘Cause nothin’ lasts forever
Even cold November rainDon’t ya think that you need somebody
Don’t ya think that you need someone
Everybody needs somebody
You’re not the only one
You’re not the only one

The Dream Today: A Tribute to M.L.K. 2016

A man had a dream to complete

A dream to unite

A unite-ing that delved deeper

A deeper seeing than skin, a molecular understanding

An understanding that manifested through his life

A life who reached the masses from humble beginnings

A beginning not fully realized, a message that goes on today…

A today we wouldn’t have without him, a pebble dropped in a pond

A pond whose ripples ever reach outward, to– today, and– beyond…

A beyond in your hands and mine, a legacy reverberates the generations

A generation who remembers today and strives to make the dream complete…

The Moment…

The window opens…

…and in that time, when vulnerability arises, a life is changed…

Be circumspect…be reverent, this is the moment–

The Death-star’s impenetrable foible, Achilles bears his heal…

…whY is this time is often misunderstood? The power play on halt.

Crossroads met, but only by discerning minds, will Frost be seen.

A heart captured or hardened, the delicate lengthy hand at its penultimate nick…

Be wise the next, the moment has waned, it will be back again but the frame

WILL-Be-smaller.

Cliché

All bets are off, so–

enjoy the familiarity that ensues…

The early bird catches the worm;

partake of this bountiful feast.

The grass is always greener on the other side.

See them now, the flourishing—-weeds?

A picture is worth a thousand words, so–

Read the words, then picture it!

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder,

Is this appealing to you?

The cards are on the table—

Read them and weep!

…metaphor with crutches, hobbling… along….

Abstract scaffolding, helping novice thought

process information…start of the dive

The moon is like a marble in the hand of the…

universe of thought spinning now in the mind

The inauguration of profundity, thank you, simile

Poetry

…poetry strains a glimpse of the human soul while peering through the frame of afar…

Revealing the filter of being, the past of experience, the future of hope—

Transcending the mundane, the common, the mediocre, the blah, blah, blah

You don’t like poetry? You cheat your senses, you hide your heart!

Think now, feel now, see, a seeing beyond now… Look—now, to then and tomorrow—

Poetry is the rhythm that resounds, a unifying chime which all hear, yet not all listen to..

Are you ready to take the dive, run the race, tune in to the vibe?

Reverberation, pulsating…streaming through our blood, electrifying our mind, connecting us—

To rhythm, to rhyme, to metaphor—to figurative, to literal, to abstract to concrete…

…poetry of the page, connecting to poetry of the heart.. poetry bringing us closer to poetry…
